The Occupy D.C. protests may be losing the battle with police in McPherson Square, but they’ve just scored a ‘W’ in the cuteness column. The Washington Post has chosen a scene from the protests as the winner of its annual ‘Peeps Show’ diorama contest.

The rules of the contest dictate that the scenes be crafted primarily out of Peeps Windows 7 Key, those ubiquitous marshmallow chicks and bunnies covered in brightly-colored sugar that surge in popularity every Easter season.

Cori Wright of Falls Church, Virginia is the artist of ‘Occu-Peep D.C.’ and says the winning Peeps ‘artist’ was Cori Wright of Falls Church Office Stand-Alone Programs, Va., who says it took her 20 hours to complete the project. The winner was chosen by a panel of judges and online voters.

This is the sixth annual Peeps contest held by the Washington Post. The candy coincidentally has another tie to the area – Washington has the distinction of being the home to the first ever Peeps store, devoted to selling the treat year-round. The Peeps parent company, Just Born, Inc. Windows Vista Key, opened the store in 2009.

Long road to South Korean stage for Syrian drama

Filed under: Cheap Fake Watches — Tags: — admin @ 11:20 pm

SEOUL (Reuters) – A woman who was imprisoned in a Syrian jail buries her head in her arms, haunted by the faces of the people who betrayed her to the government. A man uses a mirror to look at the scars from torture on his body.

The wrenching new drama enacted by a Syrian troupe, given fresh urgency by the recent months of fighting and arrests in their nation, would not have come to the stage at all if not for two people at a theatre in Seoul.

The unusual collaboration replica watches, made more difficult by the fact that South Korea and Syria do not have diplomatic relations, began last year when artistic director Kang Seok Ran and producer Kim Yo Ahen were searching for a final production in a series about marginalized people they were planning.

“We were looking for a play that could show people standing at the edge of the cliff, while dealing with current issues,” said Kim.

Through theatre connections, they met young Syrian director Omar Abu Saada, who was then trying to pull together a short play on how young people in the Middle East were using social media to let the world know about their situation during the tumultuous days of the “Arab Spring” and after.

“Saada was trying to talk about the young generation of the Middle East struggling and participating in the ongoing revolution, so we knew he was our guy,” Kim added.

The result was “Can You Please Look at the Camera?” in which Nora, an amateur movie director, secretly tries to film testimonies from victims of unjust imprisonment, picked up by the police for “crimes” such as handing out flyers to uploading something on Facebook.

The actors’ lines – all based on real stories – are intercut with taped interviews with actual detainees, projected on a screen at the centre of the stage. At emotional moments, the actors begin smoking cigarettes whose pungent aroma increases the tension in the theatre.

“Despite such sacrifice, it is amazing to see so many Syrians taking part in the revolution in order to achieve freedom, democracy and social justice, and to fulfill their dreams,” Saada said.

Bringing the play to the stage was also far from easy.

The actors had to practice behind closed doors in Syria replica watches, and had to acquire their visas through a roundabout route, since South Korea and Syria do not have diplomatic relations. The play itself was not completed until shortly before its run began.

To add to the complications, North Korea has longstanding ties to Damascus. It has reportedly been involved with Syria’s secret nuclear reactor replica watches, destroyed by Israel in 2007, and tried to export ampules of reagents for chemical weapons to Syria in 2009, in violation of a U.N. Security Council resolution.

Kim and Kang remained undaunted, however, saying that “the role of the contemporary theatre company is to introduce such difficult issues on the stage.”

Earlier dramas in this year’s series included “Sister Mokran,” about refugees from North Korea living in the South. Another dealt with people of Korean descent who live in Japan.

“The plays from this series were eventually about people. We didn’t try to say ‘let’s unite the two Koreas in a short time’ through ‘Sister Mokran,’ and we aren’t saying ‘let’s democratize Syria right now’ through this,” Kang said.

“We wanted to show people’s lives as they are, and have everyone think about issues together.”

The theatre plans to have the Syrian play continue on a broader international stage, with a performance later this month in the Middle East. A run in Europe may also be possible.

Though Korean audiences were shocked by the stories of torture and humiliation, nearly every performance was sold out. Kang believes it may have struck a chord by reminding Koreans of 1980, when massive demonstrations against Korea’s then-dictatorship wracked the city of Gwangju.

“The only way to impress our audience and to make them support us, is to be fierce and sincere in what we are doing,” Kang said.

“To do so, theatre should be able to move right into the middle of discussions going on within society.”

Fed to stand pat, Bernanke briefing will set tone

WASHINGTON, Apr. 25, 2012 (Reuters) — The Federal Reserve began a two-day meeting on Tuesday that will likely show the central bank is slightly more upbeat on the economy but in little hurry to raise borrowing costs. Investors wishing for clues into the prospect of a further easing of monetary policy from the U.S. central bank may be disappointed. U.S. economic growth has been just firm enough to weaken the case for additional unconventional stimulus through Fed purchases of government or mortgage bonds.

Still, the Fed’s policy-setting panel will probably try to curb any premature market expectations for eventual interest rate hikes by repeating that the benchmark federal funds rate is likely to remain near zero until at least late 2014.

“There won’t be much to keep the Fed from their accommodative policies for the foreseeable future,” said Victor Li, a former Fed staffer and economics professor at the Villanova School of Business.

The Fed will release a statement outlining its views on policy and the economy at around 12:30 p.m. (1630 GMT) on Wednesday.

While no policy decision appears imminent, the Fed’s array of new policy transparency steps should keep economists busy discerning recent shifts in the sentiment of policymakers.

For one thing, the Fed will release its latest round of quarterly forecasts at 2 p.m. (1800 GMT), and Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke will follow with a news conference at 2:15 p.m. (1815 GMT), where he will likely be peppered with questions on the chances of more easing.

Most analysts think Bernanke will do whatever he can to keep his options open.

Since the central bank’s last round of GDP, unemployment and inflation forecasts in January, the U.S. jobless rate has come down to 8.2 percent from 8.5 percent and the financial situation in Europe has stabilized, although it still appears troubling.

Policymakers will also offer individual projections for when they think the first interest rate increase should come and how quickly borrowing costs should rise – though these will appear on charts that do not link them to specific officials’ names.

“There is a risk that someone with a first (rate) hike in 2014 could drift into seeing that first hike in 2013,” said Michael Feroli, an economist at JPMorgan.

If that’s the case, the stock market faces the risk of a selloff as it prices out expectations for further monetary easing from the Fed.

In response to the deepest recession in generations Power Supply For Tattoo Machine, the Fed lowered benchmark overnight rates to effectively zero in December 2008 and more than tripled its balance sheet by purchasing some $2.3 trillion in government and mortgage bonds to keep down long-term borrowing costs.

According to a Reuters poll published last week Tattoo Ink Supplies, economists have dialed down expectations for a third round of bond purchases somewhat. The respondents now see a 30 percent chance of more bond buys, down from 33 percent in a poll in March.

A report early this month that showed job growth slowed sharply in March kept some hope of easing alive Rotary Machine Tattoo, and economists will look eagerly to the next round of job data on May 4 for more clues on where U.S. monetary policy may be heading.

Merkel resists calls to put growth before reforms

Filed under: Cheap Fake Watches — Tags: , — admin @ 3:43 pm

BERLIN (Reuters) – Chancellor Angela Merkel rejected calls from her centre-left opponents in Germany and Europe for economic stimulus policies that rely on new debt, warning parliament on Thursday that “growth on credit” would just tip Europe deeper into crisis.

Since the election of Socialist Francois Hollande as French president on Sunday, Merkel has come under pressure to relax the austerity measures that, as leader of Europe’s biggest economy, she has prescribed as the remedy for the euro zone debt crisis.

But Germany’s centre-right leader, standing her ground, told the Bundestag (lower house of parliament) that reducing debt and encouraging growth were “twin pillars” of European policy, rather than alternative paths.

“Growth through structural reforms is sensible, important and necessary. Growth on credit would just push us right back to the beginning of the crisis, and that is why we should not and will not do it,” said Merkel, who is expected to get a visit from Hollande next week on his first foreign trip as president.

Emboldened by Hollande’s victory, Germany’s centre-left opposition is calling for a “growth pact” for Europe to be added to the German-led fiscal pact for budgetary discipline which has been signed by 25 European Union countries but has yet to be formally ratified by many parliaments.

Speaking after Merkel, Frank-Walter Steinmeier Chloe Dresses sale, parliamentary leader of the Social Democrats (SPD), accused the government of “political lethargy” and said Germany had weathered the euro crisis well because previous governments had introduced “a blend of austerity and growth policies”.

But Merkel has insisted since Hollande’s victory that there is no alternative to the debt- and deficit-reduction programs currently being demanded from countries like Greece in return for bailouts, if they are to return to sustainable growth.

“So much has been discussed, from to euro bonds to leveraging Herve Leger sale, they are all hailed as miracle cures then deemed unsustainable,” Merkel told parliament. Hollande said just before his second-round victory that he wants to reopen the discussion on common euro zone bonds with Berlin.

“HORRENDOUS DEBT”

“The only sustainable path is to accept that getting over the crisis is a long, strenuous process which will only succeed if we tackle the causes of the crisis – which are the horrendous debt and the lack of competitiveness of some euro zone states,” said Merkel.

Hollande threatened early in his campaign to seek a wholesale renegotiation of Merkel’s “fiscal compact” to secure the inclusion of measures to foment growth and employment.

He later toned this down to make more modest proposals such as more financing for the European Investment Bank, European “project bonds” to fund infrastructure programs, a financial transactions tax and better use of EU structural funds.

German officials say Merkel is not fundamentally opposed to any of these ideas, though she has her doubts about the project bonds if they involve raising any new debt.

The first talks between German chancellor and the new French president – who have never met – will be watched closely for any clues on how they can compromise to ensure continued cooperation between the euro zone’s two biggest powers, as achieved with Hollande’s conservative predecessor, Nicolas Sarkozy.

But Merkel will meet Hollande just after a strategically-important domestic vote in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany’s most populous state, where her Christian Democrats (CDU) look set to lose to the incumbent SPD and their Green allies.

In a heavily-indebted state, the election is being seen as a referendum on Merkel’s austerity versus the SPD’s message of the need for a greater focus on growth and job-creation.

“Voters have an opportunity to decide whether we continue to wade through this quagmire of public debt under the SPD and Greens or get out of debt with the CDU and head for innovative growth,” said Peter Hintze, a senior CDU politician from NRW.

The Ifo economics institute in Munich voiced the concerns of many Merkel voters when it said in a research note that some EU countries wanted German taxpayers to finance their growth: “It is time for the euro periphery countries to start growing using their own savings.”

The Medicare-Isn’t-Government Meme, Part 4

Click here for a guide to following the health care reform story online. Buy Chanel Dresses

One of this column’s many responsibilities is to track the Medicare-isn’t-government meme. Medicare, of course DKNY Dresses sale, is government—it’s a federal program supported by taxpayers like you and me—but in various ways, sometimes subtle and sometimes not, Republican enemies of health reform have been encouraging the public to think of Medicare as some sort of private-sector enterprise that those scoundrels in Washington can’t wait to get their mitts on. (See “The Medicare-Isn’t-Government Meme,” “The Medicare-Isn’t-Government Meme, Part 2,” and “The Medicare-Isn’t Government Meme, Part 3.”)

Has the effort been successful? Hard to say, since we don’t have a base line. But in August a firm called Public Policy Polling decided to toss out a few nut-bar questions in a nationwide survey of about 900 voters conducted over three days. One of these questions was, “Do you think the government should stay out of Medicare?” (The others touched on the urban myth that Barack Obama was not born in the United States.) The findings were sobering.

One occasionally hears it alleged that the Medicare-isn’t-government meme is merely a give-private-insurers-a-larger-role-in-administering-Medicare meme that’s been misunderstood. Far from displaying ignorance, it merely demonstrates support for Medicare Advantage, the privately managed Medicare program that was meant to prove the private sector could manage Medicare more efficiently (but Marc Jacobs Dresses sale, conservatives are loath to admit, ended up proving the opposite). Are respondents to the Public Policy Polling survey misunderstood in this way? I think not. To endorse the view that government should “stay” out of Medicare pretty clearly indicates a (mistaken) belief that government has hitherto avoided meddling with it.

It is therefore with a heavy heart that I report that no fewer than 39 percent of my fellow Americans agree that “the government should stay out of Medicare.” Another 15 percent aren’t sure. This means that a majority of Americans (margin of error: 3 percent) is at best unsure as to whether Medicare is a government program. The left appears to have a firmer grip on reality Cheap Emilio Pucci Dresses, at least within this circumscribed realm DKNY Clothes sale, than the right. Sixty-two percent of McCain voters, 59 percent of self-described conservatives, and 62 percent of self-described Republicans think government should stay out of Medicare as against (a still distressingly high) 20 percent of Obama voters, 25 percent of self-described liberals, and 24 percent of self-described Democrats. Among independents, 31 percent agreed that government should stay out of Medicare.

There’s an income disparity among respondents, but it isn’t as consistent or as dramatic as you’d think; 48 percent of those earning less than $25,000 think government should stay out of Medicare compared with 35 percent earning between $25 Chloe Dresses sale,000 and $50,000; 39 percent earning between $50,000 and $75,000; 33 percent earning between $75,000 and $100,000; and 35 percent earning more than $100,000. Similarly, “government should stay out of Medicare” won support from 42 percent of high-school dropouts; 45 percent of high-school graduates; 44 percent of those with “some college”; 35 percent of those with bachelor’s degrees; and 36 percent of those who went to grad school(!). No significant differences were found between men and women. Only 30 percent of blacks said they wanted government to stay out of Medicare, compared with 41 percent of whites and 41 percent of Hispanics. Forty percent of those age 18 to 29 and 40 percent of those age 30 to 45 endorsed the proposition, compared with 36 percent age 46 to 65 and 45 percent older than 65.

That’s right: The people who actually use Medicare appear to understand it the least.

On the Waterfront

The Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro, Calif.

If you wanted to unionize Wal-Mart, where would you start? Given the company’s gift for stymieing organizers at its stores and warehouses, you might look elsewhere, say, at the drivers who truck their merchandise to the warehouses from ports, where it arrives from overseas.

And what if you wanted to clean up those ports, which in Southern California spew more pollution than a refinery plus a power plant plus 500,000 cars? (article purchased required) You might look to those same drivers, because their trucks account for 30 percent to 40 percent of that lung-killing pollution.

Those are the seeds of a quiet but hugely significant labor-green combined effort to upend the harbor trucking business at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Their goal is to replace 15,000 old and dirty trucks with cleaner 2007 models. The problem they’ve encountered is that most of those trucks are owned by drivers—most of them Latino immigrants—who make about $12 an hour. These are independent contractors at the bottom of the harbor food chain, and they can’t afford to upgrade their own rigs. And so a coalition of labor and environmental groups is pushing for the port authorities to change the rules: Trucking companies will be allowed to operate within the ports’ gates only if their vehicles meet strict new pollution standards—and if they hire their drivers as employees, with the attendant benefits.

It’s a radical restructuring of the market. And if the ports approve it in a vote later this month Replica Versace Watches sale, the plan could set a pattern for the rest of the country. Southern California’s ports are three times the size of New York and New Jersey’s. Forty percent of U.S. imports come through them—among them many of the shipments from Asia. Where these ports go on allocating the cost of cutting pollution, others are likely to follow. And if the port truckers can become employees Fake Cartier Watches, they could join a union—and that could help galvanize the workers at the box stores to whom they deliver—Wal-Mart and Target and the rest.

So, you can imagine who’s on which side here: Opposing the hire-the-drivers part of the cleanup plan are the shipping carriers, the trucking industry, and (from behind the scenes) big-box stores like Wal-Mart. No surprises there—the costs will fall on them. Pushing for the restructuring is Change To Win, created in 2005 when the AFL-CIO split up, by seven unions (including the SEIU and the Teamsters) seeking to put more money and muscle into organizing. By tying the drivers’ cause to a clean-air campaign, labor has been able to pull in environmental groups, and vice versa. For the most part Replica Girard Perregaux Watches sale, these different parts of the progressive world tend to support one another more on paper than on the streets. But in this case, groups like the Natural Resources Defense Council have been as committed as the union folks are.

Once the battle lines were drawn, and to figure out what the ports should do and how it all might work Fake Sarcar Watches, the port commissioners hired John Husing, an economist and player in the California political scene. His analysis Replica Technomarine Watches, presented in September, rests on the premise that prices for the delivery of cargo must rise to cover the cost of cleaning up the smog and soot. In economists’ terms, harbor pollution is the big “externality” of shipping freight. It’s a cost that’s not factored into the price of doing business Replica B R M Watches, but instead is shunted onto the people who live near the ports—who have to put up with high rates of asthma and premature death.
